Why South Korea Just Declared Martial Law

I’m Korean. I understand Brett’s perspective on the 2024 martial law incident in Korea. She probably wanted to express surprise, shock, and sadness, as would I and countless others living in South Korea. However, thankfully, this martial law was poorly executed due to the passive and hesitant attitude of the soldiers, which fortunately led to a swift lifting of the martial law. The soldiers themselves realized that this was not right. They were initially briefed that they were being deployed for a North Korea-related operation, but when their destination turned out to be the National Assembly building, they were taken aback. This incident was the worst blunder committed by the incompetent, self-righteous, and malicious President Yoon Suk-yeol. Even now, no one in South Korea can understand his intentions. He did not even offer a proper apology, dismissing the martial law as merely a “message” to the public. It’s truly regrettable.

What’s even more unfortunate is that if President Yoon is impeached due to this incident, there’s a high chance that the next president will come from the Democratic Party. The leading candidate from that party is a four-time convict currently undergoing trial. It’s a deeply disheartening reality.

Oh, and by the way, the example video Brett brought up at the beginning is unfortunately misleading. The woman in the video having a scuffle with the soldier is a Democratic Party politician named Ahn Gwi-ryeong. She brought along a cameraman to stage the scene and tried to seize the soldier’s firearm while he was standing still. This act could have easily led to an accidental shooting. She has been widely criticized by many people in Korea, except for those aligned with the Democratic Party. Please do not support her. The soldiers did nothing wrong. In fact, after the martial law was lifted, some soldiers even bowed deeply to civilians, apologizing as they withdrew. This was recorded on video, so please don’t misunderstand the situation.

I’m currently living in South Korea, and I literally slept through the entire thing!
